Hello folks. I didn't mention in my previous note before (see quoted below) that my Wallstreet 266 has a Powerlogix G3/466 upgrade card.

So OWC took back the the two Ram modules, and sent back two new ones, with a note that said that the other two tested good, which made me wonder whether these new ones would work. So I tried every possible combination:

top: 256
bottom: 256

top: nothing
bottom: 256

top: 256
bottom: nothing

top: 128
bottom 256

top: 256
bottom: 128

top: 64
bottom: 256

top: 256
bottom: 64

and the last four I tried with both 256 modules, so that makes four more tries.

So 12 times I took the whole thing apart, replaced the modules and had to reapply the thermal grease to the heatsink on the Powerlogix upgrade card...lots of fun.

None of the combinations worked...always there were random complete system freezes (what I suppose is called a "kernel panic"), in both OS X and OS 9.2.2.

I bought the Ram modules in June 2003 (so I am past the OWC 30 day return policy), but wasn't able to figure out the problem until now...with OS X, I, of course assumed all the freezes were software problems and that OS X didn't work on my computer. I was only able to figure out that the 256bm Ram modules were the problem after reading the archives from this list (thanks folks!).

So far, OWC won't take back the modules for a refund or credit...hopefully they will...I'll let the list know...otherwise, let me know if anyone wants to buy these from me, or if someone could suggest whether these modules will work in PC machines (so at least I could try selling them on ebay).

Best Future,
John

In June 2003, I replaced two Ram modules (64mb/128mb) with two 256mb modules from OtherWorldComputing (OWC) for my wallstreet g3 powerbook, and had been having a lot of freezes in both OS X and OS 9. I tried everything I could think of to try to fix the problem (including many OS X repair utilities), but couldn't figure it out (I assumed it was just an unfixable software problem). I just last friday swapped out the two OWC Ram modules (after reading on this forum that the wallstreets don't behave well with more than the apple recommended 192mb max), and put in the old 64/128 modules, and the freezing stopped (48 hours without a system freeze).

OWC is currently going to replace these modules with new ones, but I'm wondering if there are other wallstreet owners that have this configuration working at present. Being bad ram is really not easy to test for (someone correct me if there is a reliable test available), and that OWC says these modules work in the wallstreet, perhaps also some people like me who have been scratching their heads and thinking the problem was software related (which is what I thought).
