Stopped in at a local independent dealer to have them take a look at the ethernet connector on the rear of the lombard... we determined that the two wires in the computer socket on the outsides (one on each side of the socket) had been compressed a bit... we used a dental tool to "lift" them just a hair... came home and plugged it straight in and it seems to have connected with the router first time (before i had to wiggle a bit)... will keep my eye on it and see if that has fixed the problem... thanks all for your messages both on and off the digest.
