I'd like to be able to back it up to, and recover from, an external disk using the excellent Carbon Copy Cloner (www.bombich.com), as I currently do on my Pismo (which has firewire to make it easy of course).
I could backup by connecting a USB disk as I have a USB adapter, but you cannot boot from a USB disk to do the recovery (or can you?).
Currently what I do is create and share a drive image on the Pismo, then open it from the Wallstreet using my home LAN connection so that it appears as a mounted volume on my WallStreet desktop, then run CCC to backup. It's slow but it works. If I ever had to recover, however, it would involve taking my WallStreet's disk out, loading it in a firewire enclosure and writing to it from that backup image using the Pismo. Not impossible but not much fun.
The reason of course is that to do the recovery using CCC you must boot using another volume.
I was wondering if anyone knew whether external drives attached via the PCMCIA slot using a firewire adapter could
EITHER:
1) Boot the machine (have a feeling they cannot?)
OR:
2) Allow it to operate in firewire target disk mode
(Rationale: If it could boot then the recovery strategy would be to simply boot using the backup volume and use CCC to clone back to the internal disk. If it could operate in firewire target mode then I might be able to recover to the internal disk by attaching the WallStreet in firewire disk mode to the Pismo, and write to its internal disk that way)
So am I stuck with my existing "open heart surgery" method of recovery, or does someone know a better way?
Thanks in advance, GT
