From: Gavin Tiplady <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Backup/recovery using PCMCIA Firewire adapter? Date: Mon, 22 Dec 2003 15:24:49 +1100
I have a much loved and constantly used Wallstreet (256MB, 10Gb running 10.2.6) which runs my Tomcat, Apache and Mail servers 24 x 7.
[snip]
The reason of course is that to do the recovery using CCC you must boot using another volume.
I was wondering if anyone knew whether external drives attached via the PCMCIA slot using a firewire adapter could
EITHER:
1) Boot the machine (have a feeling they cannot?)
Wallstreets can't boot from a FW adapter, they need the extension to load to recognize the FireWire.
OR:
2) Allow it to operate in firewire target disk mode
Same thing - they can't be the 'serving' drive in target mode. They can receive, meaning you could boot your Pismo in FWTM and see it on the Wallstreet.
So am I stuck with my existing "open heart surgery" method of recovery, or does someone know a better way?
In OSX I think you are, or as someone else mentioned you could use a SCSI backup disk. In OS9 you could boot off of a CD and recover by Firewire.
Maybe try CCCloner and/or Toast to make a bootable OSX CD with CCC so you could still use the FW card to get to your backup?
