Journalling file system is default on boot volume in Panther. It is a
filesystem that keeps track of changes on the volume and this way it
recovers quicker from crashes (I did not have any yet so I keep my fingers
crossed).

As for the Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) - this is a free software that you can
use to clone a volume. I do this once every 6 months to keep my data in
optimal shape (I also use it once in a while [2-3 weeks] to copy all volumes
to the external FW drive for backup). I have three volumes on the internal
drive and copy each using CCC over to the FW drive (partitioned to three
volumes that match my partitions on the internal drive). Then I boot from
the FW disk and copy all data volume by volume back to my internal drive.
Then boot from the internal drive and everything is back to normal only data
on the volumes are reorganized. No other software needed. The whole
excersise takes under 3 hours on my half full 80GB internal disk.

You can get the CCC package from versiontracker. If you use it you can
contribute to the author that publishes it as a freeware.
