I'm a newbie to Unix. REAL green. So, I thought it would do me good to consider running a Unix OS on my spare 600 MHz iMac. I have the impression that installation of most Unix/Linus OSs is a engrossing endeavor. But I need to become comfortable editing and moving around in a Solaris environment.
Well if you already run OS X then you have your UNIX like OS right under your nose. If you insist on having Linux then you are best off with the YellowDog Linux distribution. Easy to install, kept reasonably up to date and very easy to use. I think that OS X is as close to Solaris as Linux is. There will be differences that you will need to discover once you are running Solaris.
Is Darwin a possibility? If I were to use command line in terminal, would I be in an environment comparable to Solaris? For instance, Darwin doesn't come with vi, does it?
Yes. Start using the terminal and browse around, check the man pages, ... Do some reading on macosxhints.com and other fine sites and you are going to be ready to work in Solaris. Some differences will be there, but the basics will be the same. And vi is already on OS X. You may also install the Apple Development environment and Fink. Then you can get and compile pretty much any software that you would find on any other UNIX system. If you do not like text interface of Fink you can use FinkCommander (OS X native GUI for Fink).
