Panther's GUI is supposed to feel on par with Mac OS 9's GUI, speedwise. But it might feel slower. Quartz, OS X's graphics subsystem is completely different and requires brawnier hardware. Quartz Extreme addresses most of the speed issues. Then again, I disliked the Platinum look with Mac OS 8 and 9.
