Just found out my city has free Wi-Fi hotspots throughout. . .including
but not limited to business (coffee shops) and parks. How does this
work? Can I just waltz on over to a park, sit down, boot up my Airport
enabled Pismo and surf? Is it that easy? Or are there configs?

I've only vaguely heard that to use the Starbucks Wi-Fi, you need to pay a fee, either a one-time or annual membership.
