There may be a fix for this in the aftermarket service contract world. I bought my TiBook from an authorized dealer and they have been doing my Applecare warrantee work for the entire length of possible Applecare. Now they are offering their own equivalent service contract to pick up where Applecare left off. Same guys will be doing the same services. Perhaps there are programs which have less stringent requirements you can find.
Another issue is price, of course. It is probably likely you can find a working used laptop for the price of the service contract alone, but if you like your machine and want to keep it running for three years, well, they've got us by the s & c's.
