While researching chillers and coolers for an article I wrote for the Double Click
newsletter, I purchased an ACTIVE cooler from www.xoxide.com for an amazingly low
price (less than $15.00 I think) that specced out to exactly the same as several very
similar-looking devices that were twice the price. Its an acrylic plastic angle-plate
with TWO USB-powered fans built into it and a USB port and on/off switch. The iBook
sits on little rubber knobs and the fans provide a wash of cooling air to the
underside of the iBook that blows out from under it in all directions. I tested it
extensively with ThermograpgX and a G4 iBook and I always use it now when playing
DVDs. Drops the temperature of different parts of the iBook somewhere between 6 and 10
degrees depending on which of the four component sensors are charted.
Some passive devices i looked at cost hundreds of dollars and some were fancy machined
billet aluminum or some space-age conductor. The chiller sold by XOXIDE.COM is cheap
and cheerful. I only use it when running on the AC Power Adapter so I don't know how
it would affect battery life.
