Unless I misuderstand what you're talking about, I can do that. Any
column at any depth.

I think this would overcomplicate and clutter the interface while not
saving that much in screen real estate. 

As a side note: Have you seen that you can drag content to another disk
and it will let you move into the depths of its folder hierarchy? Not as
cool as old OS 9 FinderPop, but quite nifty.
