Two different issues. For DVD playback, Lombard's 400 MHz G3 might be a bit slow for a software DVD player. But I think the main culprit may be the video card bus: there might not be enough headroom to push the amount of decoded DVD data from the CPU to the video card. For Flurry et.al., they all use OpenGL which can be very slow unless your video card has hardware acceleration support for it.
