OK, so here's my questions, hoping for some direction :

What kind of decoding available is there, that is what formats can be
decoded in software in the OS? Where is the decoding software in the OS
and what triggers it, beside inserting a DVD-disc in the OS (virtual or real).
Do VLC use the same decoding framework or does it use it's own? I'd say
it seems so.
Why doesn't the proper software decoding in VLC kick in when playing .vob
files in VLC? I mean it plays the file alright, but it so slow it's
ridiculous. Can it be changed to play them properly?

What possible scenarios can prevent Apple DVD-player from showing a
proper picture over S-Video? Can it be a PAL/NTSC problem? I get the
desktop pic on the TV, but only a grey movie screen. I tried several
sizes. VLC played fine, after some great difficulties getting the
settings right (jerky movement and wrong sized screen at first).
