What else is or can be used as a heat sink? I never thought about this before, just assuming that a fan to push hot air out the case was the only way to dissipate the heat in a laptop. Are there other components (literally something called a 'heat sink') that serve to handle the heat?

Looking at the pics of a powerbook 15" disassembly on kodawarisan, the bottom photos on http://www.kodawarisan.com/PowerBook/16.html show the motherboard with the 3 hottest components in a row - the purple G4, the large black chip (I can't remember its exact name) and the white ATI graphics controller.

Looking over the page at http://www.kodawarisan.com/PowerBook/17.html shows the heat pads that those chips physically touch - black/orange for the G4, blue for the black chip, and green for the ATI controller. they're connected to a metal band that transfers heat to the two blowers either side of the case.

iBooks are a little similar, but they use chunkier looking heat pipes to drag heat to the single fan at the back of the case :). There are links to some other disassemblies on the main site, http://www.kodawarisan.com/
