You will almost always see significant gains if you give more memory to OS
X. I would say that 512MB is a good amount to be comfortable. Right now, I
have 1.5GB in my PowerBook and I feel very comfortable. I'm comfortable
because my machine is very responsive and fast, part of it is due to this
large amount of RAM, a 5400rpm hard disk and, of course, a fast processor.
But, even if you don't replace the processor, you should see gains with the
first 2 items...
