Somehow your machine is starting in "Open Firmware" mode. Nothing serious,
just unnerving if you're not into X's inner workings. Try this from an Apple
tech article:
Open Firmware.
"To continue booting, type 'mac-boot' and press return" What's that supposed
to mean? If all you did was turn on your computer, it probably means you
need to reset your Mac's basic settings called parameter RAM (PRAM) and Open
Firmware.
If this happens every time you turn on your computer, reset the computer's
parameter RAM (PRAM).
If the message still appears after you reset PRAM, reset the Open Firmware
settings:
1. Instead of typing "mac-boot" at the Open Firmware prompt, type:
reset-nvram
2. Press Return.
3. At the Open Firmware prompt, type: reset-all
4. Press Return.
Once restarted try selecting the OS9 System Folder or your 8.5 CD. Hopefully
it should take this time.
To try forcing boot from CD try these 2 combos:
1. Hold C at startup
2. Hold Command-Option-Delete at startup.

Be nice to your kids, for it is they who will choose your nursing home.
For adult education, nothing beats children.
If you have trouble getting your children's attention, just sit down and
look comfortable.
