Consequential damage from any type of impact can cause hidden damage that may not appear for some time. A hard drive or optical drive failure may be the worst things that could happen but would you want to even play with that possibility ??
Unless you are backing up your stuff on a regular or even daily basis (for businesses), a hard drive failure can have serious consequences for anybody - including those of a financial nature related to downtime without the computer and losing important files. It just doesn't seem worth it to me.
