You should visit the website link provided as a reply to my initial message.
There are a lot of information in there that makes things more obvious.

Alternatively, if you're on OS X, you can use the Terminal to issue the
command 'drutil info'. That will list your drive specifications and what
format it supports. The Matshita UJ-825 in the PowerBook 17 supports both
DVD-R/W and DVD+R/W, according to drutil. I wish Apple would list this info
in the System Profiler output...
