There are principally three factors that govern how good a connection you get, what walls and such the signal has to pass through, the equipment in question and interference.
My house is stucco and that has chicken wire in it. The openings in that are near the wavelength of the signal but they are small enough to still block the signal. The configuration of my house is such that the signal has to go through two exterior walls to reach my bedroom. This tends to block the signal.
My first base station was an SMC model and with it I couldn't get a signal in the bedroom. My current base station, a Belkin, can be "heard" through those walls, and pretty much every where else in the house.
AFAIK there aren't any 2.4GHz phones near my house. And our microwave oven doesn't produce any noticeable effects. There are some other WANs around but I don't think I get much interference from them.
