That $400 LCD is still $400 when Apple doesn't have one for three weeks, or worse yet, when they refuse to repair their defective product due to so-called "user error".
Extended warranties are rarely a good value, and AppleCare is no exception. If the LCD went out on my 12" G4, I'd find a used LCD to replace it with, and certainly wouldn't buy it from Apple.
