I would suggest to disassemble the display as this procedure is not difficult on the 190/5300/3400/3500 (they are more or less the same thing).
The cable may be broken or simply the connector.
Welcome to the club! When you get a similar Mac for free you end up with a bunch of stuff from e-bay.
Imagine that you find a dead 3400/3500 on the e-bay and so you can fix the Kanga. Then you discover that the dead Kanga is actually okay so you spend other nights to look for the stuff to fix this one... it is a never ending story.
Or you buy a 3400 cheap and then spend more than that to buy the drive sled and cable. The one I bought was from a lot that had been scrapped by some company who removed the harddrive (and sled and cable) to protect the data.
