Normally I hardly hear the fan on my 333mhz Lombard, but sometimes after
using it for awhile on my lap or bed the fan suddenly gets louder and warm
air is pushed out the left side. This has not yet happened while using it

grew tired of this I started keeping it on but moving it onto a desk.
Normally the exhaust fan then stops after a few minutes.

Blankets are insulators. That's why we use 'em. On hard surface the laptops feet keep it off the surface to allow air underneath, thus keeping it cool without needing the fan.

The blanket (or your lap) allows the system to sink in and be insulated, removing a lot of the normal convective cooling, so the thermostat kicks in and the fan comes on. This is normal, but if it's annoying, use a lapboard or some other hard surface to set the laptop on instead of directly on the bed or your lap.
