Commercial audio disks are different creatures entirely than CD-R or CD-RW disks! Your car player may simply have trouble with CD-r or -rw disks.
If changing the burn speed changes how the disks behave in your car, then most likely it's your disks. try different brands; you may have to try several different brands.
The last thing I'd suspect would be the drive, unless you're getting a lot of coasters out of it.
