This won't help you this time around, but things like this are  
exactly why I pay for computer insurance through Safeware. It costs  
me $89 per year. The policy applies to all of my computer-related  
equipment, and even includes "stupidity." In other words, if I  
submerged my PowerBook in the bathtub or ran over it with my car, or  
if it were stolen, it would cost me $50 to replace it (assuming I  
understand the terms of the policy correctly).

I just called them to check (e.g., to see what my coverage is) and  
found out I have one of the "original" blanket policies (I happen to  
have $8,000 in coverage overall, including all computer related  
equipment; they will write a check for the closest model/specs to  
what I lost/damaged; lower coverage amounts are available for less).  
They now have laptop coverage for $6 per $100 of coverage, and you  
can inquire about other coverage as well.
