I have an Epson Stylus C80 that I've used with great success.  I believe
there are newer versions of this model out now, but they look to be very
similar.  It does have separate color cartridges for red, blue, yellow, and
black.  However, I do have to be careful what brand of ink I use. I do not
use Epson ink (just too darn expensive) but some of the cheaper cartridges
don't work well at all.  Same problems you've described.  I've had good
results with ink from The LaserMonks.com  Good luck.
