Check your iTunes preferences and look under iPod (I assume you're running OS X?). Make sure that the box that allows your iPod to be used in disk mode is not checked. Unless, of course you want to keep it in disk mode. If you keep it in disk mode, just unmount it like you would eject a CD- drag the iPod icon on your desktop to the trash, etc. you can also click the eject symbol next to your iPod in itunes.
