I am currently upgrading the HD on my Lombard . . .
I have no boot CD's (e-bay purchase) so I'm thinking of getting a

swap the two hard drives in the enclosure/laptop.

Sounds like the way to go.

Are you running X? (Sounds like maybe yes since you mention hidden files.) If so, you could use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper or Silverkeeper or Apple's own Disk Utility to copy the current internal drive to the new drive in the external housing. It will be very slow since you just have USB1 (unless you have a USB2 PC card) but I think it should work.

It's really not a lot of work - it's pretty easy to pop a drive in or out of most external housings.

You really should make your own boot cd if you don't have any - OS 9 the old-fashioned way, or if you run OS X then use BootCD. Especially since you won't be able to boot off your old drive in the USB case, and you don't have a firewire port (if you did I'd recommend a firewire rather than USB case; you don't have a firewire card, do you?), & I'm pretty certain no SCSI external HD.
