david <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wants to know...

i've been meaning to fix my 250 wallstreet for some time now, i've got the sound card/power supply part to replace, i'm getting more ram to install
(2 x 256), and now i'm thinking... is it worth it to buy one of those
sonnet crescendo upgrades?

owc lists two models, one is a g4/500 upgrade for $350 and the other is a
g3/500 upgrade for $200.

In general I'd say that spending $350 to upgrade a Wallstreet is a fool's errand, especially if you're considering spending any more $ on it for any reason (like adding more RAM). In particular I wouldn't buy a Sonnet upgrade - purely personal preference, but I believe there's better quality and value available from other sources.

i'll likely do the processor upgrade, but can anyone tell me, is the g4
worth $150 more than the g3? anyone have any experience or knowledge?

How much more the G4 is worth than the G3 seems a more subjective issue altogether. If you want to run OS X and/or do much more than light duty stuff (word processing, web browsing and email, etc.) with your Wallstreet you'll like the G4 a lot. If I were spending *MY* money on a WS I'd seriously consider the Avanti G3 you mention below - that seems an outstanding value.

i also see from wegener media:

allegro g3/500 for $270
presto! g4/500 for $220
avanti g3/400 for $99

If you rule out Sonnet and focus on the Avanti G3 or Presto! G4, I personally would have a *MUCH* harder time making a decision. Trying to decide whether to sell or upgrade a 233 MHz WS II, I've wrestled with that one for several weeks now. I just stumbled into a very good deal on a G4-upgraded Wallstreet, though; so I'm saved from the horns of that dilemma...;^D

on the allegro page they also say:

"Why not G4?
Good question.. But think about it. The only real advantage of G4 is the Altivec processor, which is rarely utilized, except for video processing. And the Wallstreet is really not set up for video processing anyway, so if you WERE going to do video, you'd save that extra $150, and get a Pismo.
So, our opinion is, get the Allegro, save your pennies, and get on with
life!"

They have a point, but I think they oversell it a bit. It seems to me that OS X is much happier when running in a G4 system Saving your pennies for a Pismo is a very tempting option, though....
