Hello All,
I¹ve got an iBook 2 or 3 years old:
G4 933 MHz
14 inch screen
640 MB Ram
OS 10.3.9
Airport Extreme
For a month or so I get the beach ball of death on startup. It
boots all the
way, first I get the normal cursor arrow and then the beach ball
starts
spinning. The battery time available on the menu bar shows
³calculating² and
never progresses to the hours remaining.
I can¹t get any program to start, they also hang.
Seems to happen whether I¹m on battery power or power adaptor.
I have to hold down the power button and force a restart. And then
it works
fine.
But it doesn¹t happen when I plug into a hard wire Ethernet line at
the
office. So I thought it could be the airport card, but it does it
even if I
turn the card off before shutdown. When I restart, same old problem.
This is a clue, something it can find at work isn't there when you
boot at home.
Make sure you're not automounting server drives. Another cause of
this is that it's trying to traverse a nonexistent directory service.
Go into Utilities and run Directory Access. Uncheck all the services.
If these things don't fix it something else is happening.
