Yeah, that would be from the Cuda and PRAM resets in the furious attempts to
get my Mac up and running and save my work.
By the way, what's your experience on replacing the clock battery in the
Yosemite? I haven't had any time/date problems under normal use, but how
long does the battery usually last?
Could the sleep problems be related to a failing clock battery?

As to my serious problems detailed in my last mail, my Mac is up and running
anew, though for how long is anyone's guess. I was able to boot from an
emergency zip disk I'd made with OS9, repair the HD and select a parition to
start up from. I then disabled the Energy Saver control panel.

The problem occurred three times after the Mac put itself to sleep as per
the Energy Saver settings. It wouldn't wake from sleep, wouldn't restart
from the keyboard, wouldn't shut down from the power button on the front of
the Mac; all I could do was restart from the reset button (triangle) on the
front. But at that point the Mac would either freeze part way thru startup
or freeze in the Finder, or else I got a flashing question mark at startup.
After a couple of these hard restarts, the Mac would boot into Open
Firmware, and I then shut down. I reset the Cuda switch and in the end the
Mac seemed to work okay afterwards.

So the key seems to be if the Mac puts itself to sleep via the Energy Saver
control panel; if I remember correctly, the problem didn't occur when I
chose Sleep from the Special menu. The conflict seems to be with the VST
Ultratek ATA/66 card in general, and its latest firmware update in
particular. I will advise VST and report my experience at the xlr8yourmac
site and versiontracker.com, at the download area for the firmware.
