Kurt:

The August 2001 issue of Macworld magazine points to their online reveiws of
both DiskWarrier 2.1 and TechTool Pro 3.0. DW gets 4.5 mice and TTP gets
3.5. DW's PlusOptimizer defragments, but DW does not check the disk itself
for bad blocks. The review says it's the best disk utility for the Mac by
far. The TTP review reads like you must use with caution. These articles
point to older reviews on Norton Utilities 5.0 (ec '99) which gets 3.5 mice
and NUM 6.0 (Mar '01), also 3.5 mice.

I've used only Norton since my first Mac LC, but for the past few years with
my Performa 6300, and PowerBook G3, I've never loaded it onto the hard
drive. The 6300 has been running much smoother since. I occasionally run
Disk Doctor and Speed Disk from the CD when I suspect the need for it, and
then only after a backup and on a disk that is no more than 80% full.
