I've heard that too, but it are both IDE/ ATAPI drives so you could try
swapping them and see if you can boot from it. Either try holding down the C
or Command-Option-Shift-Backspace with a bootable CD inserted.

They use the same IDE cable.
For playing DVDs on the beige G3 you need the software decoder DVD Player from
Apple, but you have to patch it otherwise it won't work.
