I'm getting ready to buy a scanner too and am interested in the answers.
Canon scanners are getting pretty high marks in reviews; Agfa also, but I
can't find them in the computer stores and the Mac catalogs. MicroCenter
used to have them but had problems getting them in. We like our old UMAX
Astra 2400S (SCSI) scanner, but recent reviews indicate that the UMAX brand
is close to the bottom. In this price range for both Mac and PCs, Consumer
Reports of May 2001 gives high marks to Agfa SnapScan e20, Canon CanoScan
N650U, Microtek ScanMaker 3700, and Mustek Plug-N-Scan 1200 UB. For a
little more money, I really like what I see about the Epson Perfection
1240U.
