Ola Nick,
It's quite possible the sound card, or as Apple wishfully likes to call it,
the "Personality Card", has gone bad and needs repair or replacement.
I had similar problems with mine (in a beige G3) and eventually it died
completely, emitting horrible distorted noises. I am currently sans sound.
However, since my Mac also doubles as my CD player, I do have a stereo mini
plug hooked into the headphone socket of the CD-ROM drive.
Tchau, Joel
