other than a hardware problem, in the sound control panel you can set
the output level of the right and left channels, this may have been
played with or the sound prefs may be corrupted.  i'd check the control
panel settings and if they look good i'd trash the sound prefs., and the
finder prefs. while your at it for good measure.  it certainly could be
the hardware, but hopefully not.
