Did Apple use cheap parts in the Beige G3? I've never had an ethernet port
die in any other Mac!

Nope. The Ethernet ports are the same as on any 10 mbps Ethernet Mac.
The rest of the Beige machine is "Apple Standard" quality, which is about as
good as it gets.
Don't be too surprised if your Ethernet problem turns out to be due to a bad
processor card.
I had a G3/266 MT and nothing could make that machine's LocalTalk port work.
After three mobo replacements and two "transition card" replacements (the
LocalTalk port is used to support the builtin modem, which is on the
"transition card"), the Apple service provider *finally* replaced the
processor card.
That was the fix ... the processor card.
Oh, and that machine was such a headache for Apple, and its service
providers, that they authorized an exhange whereby I gave them back my G3/266
Rev. 1 and I got in return a new G3/300 Rev. 3. And an additional year's
warranty for free. What a deal.
