FWIW, a lot of the same flexibility can be obtained by repackaging one's
7500, 7600 [ * ] or 7300 in an 8600/9600 case.
An 8600/9600 case is a taller version of the Beige G3 MT case.
An 8600/9600 case can accommodate any combination of:
1) Five 5.25" half-height (1.6") drives *plus* one 3.5" third-height (1")
drive,
2) Four 5.25" half-height (1.6") drives *plus* two 3.5" half-height (1.6")
drives *plus* one 3.5" third-height (1") drive, or
3) Four 5.25" half-height (1.6") drives *plus* three 3.5" third-height (1")
drives.
A 3.5" half-height (1.6") drive or a 3.5" third-height (1") drive may be
installed in any 5.25" half-height (1.6") drive position.
Similarly, a Zip (100 MB or 250 MB) drive or a Macintosh floppy drive may be
installed in any 5.25" half-height (1.6") drive position.
I have repackaged a spare 7300 mobo, and installed a NewerTech G3/400 CPU
card in that 7300 mobo. No need for a cache card as the 1 MB cache on the G3
card is four times the size of the cache on the 7300, anyway.
OWC's so-called "converted" 256 MB non-EDO DIMMs work just fine in these
mobos, and were recently selling for $45.95. Install in pairs for best
performance.
Not as cheap as the SDRAM for the G3 mobos, but then a 7300 mobo doesn't cost
a fraction of what a G3 mobo costs.
The 8600/9600 power supply capacity is 390 watts ... much more than a G3 MT
... and has drive power connectors for SEVEN standard disk drives *and* one
SCSI Zip drive ... also more than a G3 MT power supply.
[ * ] the 8600/9600 power supply mobo connectors will require modifications
to accommodate 7500 or 7600 mobos. Contact me off-list for details, if
interested.
