My Beige G3/300 Minitower is one of the most stable (on 9.2.1 IE) and
reliable machines I have ever used. It was bought with the UW 4.5SCSI
internal HD & I've since added another identical internal drive. I find
with the extra speed of the SCSI drives, its speed compares favourably with
newer systems I have used elsewhere.
Regarding the "dead" ethernet port, the Mac won't switch to it unless you
have an RJ45 cable hooked to a hub.
There doesn't need to be anything else connected to the hub - I run my
(standalone) machine this way so I can easily run the Epson Stylus RIP, with
the Epson 1520 on the printer port and a modem on the modem port.
The RIP needs AppleTalk to be active, and this way was more straightforward
than using "Remote Only"
