I subbed EXACTLY the same unit for the OEM CD-ROM in my beige 
(originally) G3/266 Desktop model.  Er... I fitted it and it worked. 
I did have problems at one stage, I think it was when I upgraded to 
OS 9.1, but not sure.  Apple's CD driver didn;t like it for some 
reason and it gave me the 'This Disk is unreadable on this 
Macintosh'-type rubbish.

I seem to remember a spell running it with the Toast driver made it 
happy again- seemed to initialise the hardware to the presence of the 
CD-RW drive so it worked henceforth with both Toast & Apple drivers. 
Or something.
