Always an interesting subject. When I was watching the traffic in the lists
on this subject and asking my own questions, some folks said, in effect:
"Don't sweat it, us Mac folks at home are not targets. Just keep your file
sharing 'off'." Others said: "OK, but wait til OS X comes along with its
UNIX base - all kinds of threat exists in the UNIX world since UNIX is used
in some high value database servers, file servers, and internet servers."
Since I am a little bit paranoid about this, and I needed a router for
several Macs, I bought a little hardware box from Asante that combines
router and consumer level firewall functions. I'm happy with that.
For software, just yesterday, I noticed that the Macworld homepage had a
link on the left side to Symantec's Personal Firewall, I think it's called.
If you want something a bit heavier, check on IPNetRouter and related
products at: http://www.sustworks.com/
There's an excellent site at: http://www.threemacs.com./network/index.html
http://www.firewallguide.com/ might help with ideas, but I think that is
more PC oriented, and heaven knows that the PC folks need firewalls much
more than us lucky Macintosh types.
