Hi, I've always found the SETI@Home project interesting but a tad useless
(partially b/c I find the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence to be a
rather nebulous pursuit in light of a complete lack of evidence to suggest
its existence (though, I guess that's not an argument against analysis... my
priorities are a little more low-key), but also b/c I find astronomy to be a
snore (well, aside from looking at the stars... that's neat)).

The following is called Folding@Home and what they do is model the
configuration of proteins (unlike SETI@Home this project has the potential
to have implications for understanding biology and, especially for
developing new drugs (or understanding of the mode of action of drugs)).

They have a Mac OS X client (& Windoze 95+, Solaris & Linux)
<http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/Cosm/>

You've got to fire up Terminal, cd (change directory) into the folder and
execute the command:
./fahclient.exe -config

enter an e-mail address, type yes or no where appropriate and then it will
configure itself.

Next, type the following to run the app:
./fahclient.exe

And, if you want you can open up another window in the Terminal and execute
"top" to display the CPU cycles (my dynamic.x runs at 60+% when nothing is
happening).

L8r, Eric.
