Sure you can, that is what I am using with my G4. I have a Twin Serial
USB Adapter from Keyspan that runs my DeskJet and the Supra modem. I
have connected 2 PC modems to this adapter, both from Supra and they
both worked fine. They had a 9 pin-VGA style connectors which I had to
convert to Mac serial but they worked fine. One of them was fried
during a thunderstorm and I got another Supra which I had to flash back
to an earlier ROM to get it to connect at high speed. I used a PC for
that (!).

When it comes to software, ARA works fine, FreePPP works fine too.
