modem scripts aren't a major problem, i'm using a generic (no case
markings at all) modem that identifies itself to the computer as a
"rockwell v.34+", generally you can try a couple of the scripts and find
one that works well. for 56k modems the scripts can be a little more
important, but it's not too hard to hack one of the existing scripts
once you find out what the preferred settings are. all you really need
is the adapter cable, i've made 3 myself over the years. the one thing
to stay away from are "win" modems, there are some really el cheapo
modems out there that use the computer to do the signal processing
instead of doing it in the modem. i'd avoid these cheapo modems even on
a pc. (there are some cheap inkjets that do the same thing, i.e. make
your computer do all the work instead of having their own processor and
ram). i've also used a supra and a hayes with no problems. external is
definitely better than internal, those flashing lights can tell you allot.

"In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up
because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a
Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I
wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a
Protestant.
Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up."
