AFAIK a non-USB Mac is not capable of booting from PCI USB or 
FireWire devices (I could be wrong as I only had a 7500) . My 7500 
only enabled USB after the USB card extension was loaded by Mac OS. 
This annoted me more than somewhat as i had no k/b until after the OS 
started to load but that's a side point. This means that it 
effectively can't find any USB devices until the USB extension loads, 
I presume the same is true for FireWire (I never got that far!). YMMV.
