I usually use TechTool to rebuilt the desktop or just holding those two buttons when I want to do it at startup. Lately I was browsing my HD with ResEdit to check for unwanted invisible files and made the desktop files visible to trash those to let them be created at startup, but that way you lose all your GetInfo text.
