Gary....

I have run both upgrades and you are pretty much correct in your
assumptions.  Unless you need AltiVec abled aps, the G3/500 would be your
best bet.  Even in my own personal favorite computer here (9500/G3), I took
out the G4/400 after running it for awhile (with some instability) and
stuck in this G3/400 running at 456 MHz rock solid.  The only thing
you're/we're missing is the brand new G4 to replace our upgraded Macs!  :))
