Price. :) If you're a college, and can get a 10-pack educational license of pagemaker for the same cost as 2 copies of quark, which would you choose? If you're a person working out of your home, and you can pick up one piece of print software for less than half the cost of the other... Which would you choose? It's really quark's own fault, if they would have been smart they would have: A) created a trimmed down package that had most of Xpress's current composition abilities, but lacked many of the things printers really need to do their job correctly. This way printers could recommend something to their clients that competed with pagemaker on price, and would be so much more compatible and easier on their workflow. B) created great educational pricing. Come on, if a school (college or otherwise) buys quark now, its for a specialized publishing program... Chances are the actual newspaper and publications staff uses pagemaker. Yes, you won't make as much per copy, but when you consider the fact that you have ZERO marketshare, suddenly $250 a copy instead of $700 doesn't sound so bad as its revenue you weren't getting before. Plus, you have the students using your software and comfortable with it if they decide to design from their homes. C) actually hired a tech-support staff, instead of one guy named bill manning 30 phones. Heh, the last one is from an experience where we called quark in 4 times in 2 days abut a major problem, and the same person picked up every time.
