Firstly I can say I really like OS X and have been using it since I 
got it in March. It's been through some rough patches and I have 
sworn at it *a lot* in the past but, when I finally get it, 10.1 
should fix the bugs that have annoyed me so much.

OS X doesn't use standard Unix folder systems for file storage. It 
uses folders in the Users folder in the OS X boot hard disks root to 
store user specific stuff and profile info (rather than a 
/home/<user> folder as in Linux) it also uses a folder called Library 
in the root to store app support/help and universal stuff. There is, 
thirdly, a folder in the Users folder called Shared where users can 
put common files. I don't know what e-mail client you use so I can't 
give you a solution but I hope this info is useful.

FWIW a cube running OS X would look sooooo nice. The two were made 
for each other :)
