Thanks to all for your help. I've run across a e-mail list and there are quite a few with the same problem of external CDRW not working with Toast and OS X.
According to one, Roxio claims that they are not the problem. So therefore, they must be claiming that Apple is the source of these conflicts. I believe that my best solution is to upgrade. Third party add-ons are historically been sources of difficutlies for serious upgrading. When the Mac is purchased, it should be purchased with the complete package installed. That way you know that everything is working together. I'm sticking with 9.2.2 until I can seriously upgrade with a CDRW built in the Macs. That is the best solution. Scanners seem to be the weakest point for OS X. So far I have not seen much upgrading for scanners. They will probably be coming out soon. OS X is still a new puppy that is growing fast.
