I am trying to get OS X running on my old beige desktop G3 (rev A ROM).
I installed a new 20GB IDE drive and a new ZIP drive.
All of this works nicely with OS X 10.1.3.
Its the G3 I always wanted.

But I can't get Ethernet working. The G3 has Built-In Ethernet,
and I've also tried a MacAlly card (they sent me a new OS X driver)
and an Asante 690 (they sent me OS X driver as well).
The symptom is the same for all three.

The basic symptom (BuiltIn, MacAlly and Asante) is that the Ethernet
port
begins to configure with DHCP, it gets a plausible internet address
in the block assigned to my cable ISP (RCN) sending 16 or so packets,
receiving 8 or so. Packets *are* being exchanged.

Then the port kind of dies. A few packets continue to dribble in
and dribble out, every five seconds or so. But ping fails on
everything,
timing out and declaring the Host is down.

The latest drivers are installed, the cabling is a 5 ft Cat5
straight-through (no cross-over) to an RCA cable modem.
The drivers were installed with the cabling attached
to a live cable modem. The cards show up under System Profile
and the ports show up under System Preferences.
AppleTalk is disabled. I rigorously power-cycled everything,
the modem and Mac, before installation. The cable modem setup
works with a Windows laptop.

That's it. Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions,
or should I just take this thing out behind the house and shoot it?
Has anyone gotten Ethernet to work on a beige G3 rev A with OS X?
Rev C ROMS are available on EBay for $60+. Is this necessary?
